Ground Beef Recall 2009 Issued

On May 13, 2009, The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a ground beef recall due to an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections. There was a ground beef recall because there was an E. Coli Contamination in Valley Meats LLC of Coal Valley, Illinois. More than 96,000 pounds of beef had potentially been contaminated. The outbreak was first reported by the Ohio Health Department, and the illness has been reported in connection with Valley Meats ground beef in Pennsylvania, and Illinois.

E. Coli Contamination Prompts Ground Beef Recall
Ground beef produced by Valley Meats LLC of Coal Valley, Illinois is the subject of a federally-mandated recall. The Department of Agriculture food safety.

Ground beef and ground beef products, sold in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia, are being recalled because they may be contaminated with E.coli.

The products are no longer being sold as fresh and are past their expiration dates – however, you should check your freezer to see if you have already bought and frozen the products affected.

In order to identify the recalled products, you should check the package label and look for the product name, package weight and sell-by date. All labels will show an establishment number of EST 492 inside the USDA mark of inspection.
